IPL for sun damage, redness and pigmentation

Intense pulsed light treats the brown and red marks that build up with sun exposure and age: sun spots, freckling, flushing and broken capillaries. It works on the face, neck, chest and hands.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

How it works

IPL is not a laser. It is a flash of broad-spectrum light passed through a filter chosen for your concern. Brown pigment and the blood in small surface vessels absorb that light and are heated, while the skin around them is left alone. Brown spots then darken and flake off. Redness fades as the treated vessels are reabsorbed.

What a course of treatment looks like

Three to six sessions, three to four weeks apart. Spots often look darker for about a week before they lift, which is the treatment working. Redness tends to need more sessions than pigment.

Is it right for you?

Usually a good fit

  • Sun spots, age spots and freckling
  • Diffuse redness, flushing and visible broken capillaries
  • Uneven tone on the face, neck, chest or backs of the hands

We may advise against it if you have

  • Deeper skin tones, where IPL carries a higher risk of pigment change. We assess your skin type first and may suggest a different device.
  • A current tan or recent sunburn
  • Melasma, which IPL can make worse
  • Pregnancy or light-sensitizing medication

This is general information. Your consultation covers your own health history before anything is booked.

Before and after your appointment

  1. 1Avoid sun and self-tanner for several weeks beforehand.
  2. 2Come with clean skin and no makeup on the area.
  3. 3Expect some redness for a few hours. Treated spots darken, then flake away within about a week.
  4. 4Use a broad-spectrum SPF every day during the course, or new pigment will undo the work.

“The equipment was great and we didn't just learn textbook theory — we used real, modern tools. They always kept things current and relevant. I love…”

Common questions

What is the difference between IPL and a laser?
A laser uses one wavelength aimed at one target. IPL uses a filtered range of wavelengths, so a single session can treat brown pigment and redness together. The trade-off is that IPL is less precise, which is why skin type matters so much.
Can IPL treat melasma?
We generally do not treat melasma with IPL, because the heat can trigger more pigment. At the consultation we will tell you whether your pigment looks like sun damage or melasma, and what we would do instead.
Is there downtime after an IPL photofacial?
Very little. Most people go back to work the same day. Brown spots look like coffee grounds on the skin for a few days before they flake off, and makeup can cover that.
