There are many reasons why you may want to erase unwanted ink, whether it has become unattractive, no longer expresses you, or is associated with painful memories. The first thing you need to know is that all tattoo laser removal works on the same principle. The laser targets the tattoo ink pigments using specific light wavelengths to break down the ink into small enough particles to be absorbed by the body.

With advances in medical technology, you no longer have to spend the rest of your life regretting and hiding your inked skin. Laser tattoo removal is a cosmetic treatment that uses targeted laser energy to break up the pigmentation of your tattoo. The certified dermatology team at BC Medical Spa Coquitlam Clinic is equipped with picosecond laser technology that breaks up the ink under your skin quickly and safely.

What is Picosecond Laser (ND-YAG)

ND-YAG laser also known as Q-Switch or Picosecond laser is a very safe laser for darker skin types and has a wavelength of 532nm, 1064nm, 1320nm. Uses for this laser include tattoo removal, age and sun spots, birthmarks, melasma, tattooed eyebrows, nevus, nevus of Ota, and carbon therapy. This hands-on training program will cover how Nd-Yag, Picosecond, Q-Switch lasers work including the physics of this laser.

An overview of the anatomy and physiology of skin parameters, photo facial, vascular and pigmented lesions, and tattoo removal will be an important part of the course. The lectures will include lasers mediated skin tightening and resurfacing, acne treatment, pigmentation, and vascular lesions removal, skin typing, and operational and treatment safety measures.

How It Works

  • Before the procedure, a numbing agent is applied to the target area.
  • During the treatment, it delivers energy with an extremely precise, high-power laser in extremely short pulses to target ink particles with great impact.
  • These pulses shatter the tattoo ink into minuscule particles. Following the treatment, most of the ink particles are removed by the body.

FAQs

You’ll need several treatments before you’ll notice a significant difference. The number of treatments you’ll need depends on the amount and type of ink used and how deeply it sits. Keep in mind it takes three-to-six weeks between treatments for your body to absorb the pigment residue.

Prior to a laser tattoo removal treatment, you need to avoid sun exposure for four weeks beforehand. You may be instructed to discontinue taking aspirin and ibuprofen, since they may cause you to bruise after your treatment.

To ensure the complete removal, regardless of the colors involved. The length and amount of treatments required for tattoo removal will vary based on the size and design of the tattoo being removed.

Though there are many factors involved like the depth, density, and types of colors are probably the biggest determining factors. After each treatment, we fragment a little bit more ink and a little deeper into your skin, blistering and scabbing often follows for a week or two. We see some tattoos disappear within 2-3 treatments, as well as in some cases seeing tattoos requiring 8-10 or more treatments for complete removal.

Many tattoo artists encourage customers to receive a minimum number of laser treatments to lighten an existing tattoo before covering it with a new one. This will dramatically reduce the chances of the old tattoo appearing through the new one over time. In most cases, a minimum of 2-4 treatments is all that’s required to lighten an existing tattoo.

During the treatment, you will likely experience a feeling that resembles a rubber band snapping against your skin. You may also feel a warm sensation in the treatment area. Many patients find the treatment tolerable, though we can also numb the area for optimal comfort. Our team will do everything they can to make your laser tattoo removal session more comfortable.
